Our Solution

We reviewed plant drawings and photographic surveys to construct a 3D cad model to simulate the shielding effects of the physical structure of the gloveboxes and to identify potential sources of radiation.

We worked with the customer to design and carry out a gamma-spec survey that would provide sufficient information to populate the source terms in the model. This provided a lower bound estimate of the quanitity of material at each location.

The source model was then used to evaluate the dose in working areas in front of the boxes and at contact with the boxes. The impact of proposed decommissioning steps, such as removal of source objects or glovebox front panels were then simulated. This will inform the development of a decommisisoning strategy that minimises the potential dose uptake to workers thus improving safety.
