A redundant fuel storage pond containing a wide variety of radioactive residues was to be decommissioned
The facility was constructed approximately 50 years ago and the building infrastructure was limited. The material stored within the facility had to be removed and transferred to modern facilities for processing and ultimate storage.
The Issues
The data
available to support development of a definitive solution for waste
recovery and export was limited. This meant that a strategy had to be
developed that was flexible enough to accommodate uncertainties.
The
solution also had to marry with new facilities operating to modern
standards which placed a high demand upon the limited infrastructure.
The strategy also had to be consistent with the site wide strategy for
dealing with waste material similar to the types stored in the pond.
Our role was to work with the project to assist the development of an appropriate strategy for decommissioning the pond.
