Our solution
The options were then evaluated against a set of criteria. The
objective being to select the options which optimised the overall
approach to dismantling. The methodologies helped the project team
focus the development.
The determination of a waste strategy for
the project involved consideration of the requirements for long term
storage of the highly radioactive waste, the requirements for
processing the waste and the interfaces between the possible processing
and storage facilities and the decommissioning project. The aim being
to reduce overall lifetime costs, whilst ensuring the waste was treated
in a safe way.
A model of the spread of radioactive materials
onto and into the decommissioning equipment was developed. This allowed
strategies to be developed for the decontamination of equipment, access
for maintenance and maintenance periodicy. Radiation exposure dose
rates were also calculated to allow the requirements for personnel
shielding to be determined and to provide information for the
calculation of a radiation dose budget for the work.
