Post operational clean out of a redundant irradiated fuel storage and decanning facility
The facility was used to store irradiated fuel elements underwater, after discharge from the reactor, followed by the removal of the fuel cladding to allow the fuel to be reprocessed.
The Issues
When the plant was
shut down there were significant quantities of fuel which was difficult
to process; fuel cladding corrosion products, fine debris in the form
of sludge and larger items of waste.
The nature of the project
was extremely complex, partly in respect to the materials to be cleared
and partly in the interfaces that exist between this and other plants
in the processing cycle.
We worked with the project team so that
we understood the scope and extent of the work necessary whilst
identifying and assessing the risks involved.
