Nineteen-year-old Sam Lee has been working at REACT as part of the Year in Industry scheme.

His work -- developing a visual representation of radiation levels – recently resulted in him being awarded the best engineering project at the Year in Industry awards held at Durham University.

Sam was competing against 40 other students from across the North of England for the award and received £250 in prize money and a certificate. Now studying at Warwick University, he said: “I decided to do the Year in Industry scheme because it would help me gain important skills before I go to university. “The scheme can also help with sponsorship and allows you to earn some cash before going to university.’’

Research has shown that 70 percent of students who take part in the Year in Industry scheme leave university with a first or upper second degree. Sam said: “I love being challenged. Working at REACT allowed me to develop my problem-solving skills and helped me manage my time more effectively.’’
