Two way process
REACT is committed to it`s graduate engineers achieving Chartered Status via it`s Monitored Professional Development Scheme, which empowers and motivates young engineers at the start of their working lives.
Company director and mentor Trevor Craig believes that mentoring will only succeed if it is a reciprocal process. "There has to be a good working rapport between the mentor and trainee in terms of communication and learning. In fact, mentoring should actively promote this," he says. So what sort of help does a mentor provide? "It varies," says Trevor. "It can involve providing clear guidance on technical matters, general motivation, or liaising with line managers to ensure trainee needs are balanced against those of the company." Interestingly, mentoring also tests the mentor! "Mentoring offers the opportunity to review your own position and development, as it frequently requires you to undertake self-analysis of your own experiences and difficulties to allow you to offer advice and provide guidance. I think that the production of MPDS Quarterly Reports helps to develop this extremely useful tool in engineers and is one of the traits that I believe distinguishes a Chartered Engineer from others."
