Demolition on the
Sellafield Site

React led the development of a right-first time demolition concept that was successfully implemented on a redundant facility in a very congested area of the Sellafield site.

Key Benefits

  • Buy-in to a concept that minimised risk to the workforce.
  • Early-stage stakeholder consensus removed the commercial risks of re-work.
  • Clearance of land to enable decommissioning of neighbouring buildings.

Project Overview

Working as part of an integrated multi-disciplinary team, React was asked by the client, Sellafield Limited, to identify the best concept for the demolition of a redundant facility in a highly congested area of the site, where the approach to demolition was not immediately obvious.

As part of the team, comprised of engineering, construction and subject matter experts from both Cumbria Nuclear Solutions Limited (CNSL) and the client organisation, React provided technical leadership to gain an understanding of the challenges and constraints associated with the area. React led the process of developing and underpinning a series of bespoke options, which was evaluated in collaboration with influential stakeholders. Through facilitation techniques and stakeholder management, React was able to obtain consensus to establish the best demolition concept.

Our approach enabled collective and rigorous decision making; we created an environment in which decision makers gained a strong understanding of the problem and constraints and the views and input of all the required subject matter experts could be heard and evaluated. The assessment process provided a solution which was ‘right first time’ and reduced the risk of future redesign at a later stage in the project. In facilitating buy-in from the teams that were going to implement the works on site it ensured that best practice in site safety and construction was integrated throughout the whole process.

React continued to support the project throughout; providing proactive stakeholder management, and the production of key documentation to gain permission to undertake work on the site. Despite some challenging complexities, this process enabled a right first time demolition methodology to be established, agreed and implemented, with the facility now safely and successfully demolished, with all waste disposed of.
