Establishing the history
of Sellafield

Since 2018 React has successfully compiled and delivered comprehensive histories for over 80 legacy facilities on the Sellafield site. We identify the information required to enable and accelerate decommissioning and demolition works. Developing the best possible understanding of the assets is one of the most powerful tools in decommissioning.

Key Benefits

  • A comprehensive history of legacy buildings in a succinct and accessible form.
  • Early physical risk identification for decommissioning and demolition projects

Project Overview

There are a significant number of buildings on the Sellafield site, many dating back decades, and the available space for new facilities is limited. Many are redundant and either require decommissioning to retire asset burdens, or demolition to make space for new facilities to support the continuing decommissioning mission. Due to the age of many facilities, there is no comprehensive or consolidated history of the buildings which decommissioning and demolition teams can use.

React undertook an investigation of each building, which included searching records, stakeholder liaison, site visits and making use of our extensive internal experience to collate tailored documents to summarise the history of the building, its current status, and constraints and hazards associated with the building.

The client has seen significant value from this process, not only in helping enable more demolition works to commence, but also in helping remove uncertainties that may have otherwise impacted the cost, schedule, or safety of the decommissioning and demolition activities.
