Decommissioning Engineering

Company Overview

We are looking for a senior engineer who can take ownership of meaningful technical work and turn complex requirements into clear, proportionate and implementable solutions. You will work across front-end definition, design and delivery support, with enough autonomy to apply your judgement and enough access to experienced people to keep developing quickly.

Role purpose

Own mechanical engineering packages and contribute practical engineering judgement to complex projects.

Experience Guide

Approximately 3-5 years post-graduation, assessed on capability rather than years alone.

Working Location

Office based in West Cumbria, with site surveys and client attendance as required.

What you will do

  • Define engineering problems, requirements, assumptions and design bases.
  • Develop and assess options, explaining technical, safety, cost, schedule and implementation implications.
  • Produce and check calculations, specifications, technical notes, drawings, design descriptions and substantiation.
  • Lead or contribute to design reviews, technical queries, change assessments and verification activities.
  • Specify equipment and systems and support supplier engagement, manufacture, installation, testing or commissioning where required.
  • Undertake site surveys and use operational/site context to improve the quality and practicality of designs.
  • Work effectively with mechanical, process, CE&I, civil/structural, safety, project management and client teams.
  • Communicate technical issues clearly to both specialist and non-specialist stakeholders.
  • Support and review the work of graduates and less experienced engineers.
  • Help improve technical methods, templates and lessons learned across React.

What success should look like

  • Work packages are well defined, proportionate and delivered to the required quality and timescale.
  • Options and recommendations make the basis for decisions clear, including assumptions and residual uncertainty.
  • Designs reflect real site, maintenance, installation and operational constraints rather than existing only on paper.
  • Technical issues are raised and resolved early, with clear ownership and documented reasoning.
  • Less experienced colleagues receive useful technical guidance and constructive review.

What we are looking for

Essential experience & evidence

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Ability to select and apply appropriate engineering principles, standards and levels of substantiation.
  • Experience working within a quality-controlled design or engineering process.
  • Clear, concise technical writing and the ability to explain the reasoning behind a recommendation.
  • A practical mindset and willingness to take ownership from problem definition through to usable output.

Desirable, but not essential

  • Experience in nuclear, decommissioning, defence, energy, process plant, heavy industry or other regulated sectors.
  • React delivers a diverse portfolio of projects, we are open to various candidate backgrounds as listed below:

Candidate with a mechanical bias or a closely related discipline:
  • Experience with mechanical handling, machinery, lifting, pressure systems, ventilation, plant layout or equipment design.
  • Competence with relevant CAD, calculation or design tools such as Autodesk Inventor / AutoCAD or equivalent.
  • Site, installation, commissioning or plant-modification experience.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Candidate with a process bias or a closely related discipline:
  • Experience of liquid, gas, ventilation, effluent, solids handling, treatment, sampling or waste-routing systems.
  • HAZOP participation or facilitation and familiarity with LOPA, DSEAR, COMAH, BAT or related methodologies where relevant.
  • Experience with process modelling, simulation or hydraulic software.
  • Site, commissioning, operations or plant-modification experience and progress towards chartership.

Candidate with a CE&I bias or a closely related discipline:
  • Experience process control & safety system, control-system architecture, instrumentation, functional safety, LV distribution, drives or machinery systems.
  • Familiarity with standards such as BS 7671, IEC 61508/61511, IEC60204-1, machinery safety or client/nuclear design standards as relevant.
  • Site survey, installation, commissioning, test or fault-finding experience.
  • Progress towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.

The behaviours that matter in this role

  • You enjoy understanding why a problem exists, not just producing the requested document.
  • You know when more analysis is needed and when the team has enough evidence to move forward.
  • You are willing to question inherited assumptions and propose a simpler, more effective solution.
  • You take pride in technically credible work that can be used by clients and delivery teams.
  • You share knowledge, accept review constructively and support others without needing formal authority.

What you can expect from React

  • Ownership of real engineering problems rather than a narrow supporting role.
  • Broad exposure across project stages and disciplines, with the opportunity to see work through into delivery.
  • Close access to experienced engineers and project leaders.
  • Opportunities to mentor graduates and progress towards technical or project leadership.
  • Professional development and chartership support, subject to confirmation of the formal package.
